God is always up to something, even when you can't see the whole picture. Jesus' love for Lazarus and his family is evident, and John stresses that fact in chapter 11. So that makes the beginning of the chapter very odd when Jesus hears of Lazarus' illness but chooses to stay for a couple of days before traveling to him.
